Playa La Nea is a coastal bathing zone in Tenerife, Spain, located in the municipality of El Rosario. The beach measures 275 metres in length and 28 metres in width, with a substrate of dark sand and gravel. The water is exposed to moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The official bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September.

Coastal seawater. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to 50 metres deep. Water mass classification: natural coastal surface water (ES70TFTIV Punta del Roquete – Bajas del Puertito). Moderate wave regime with exposure to waves. Current regime and annual total precipitation data not specified.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococcus). The coastal surface water body is in good ecological status (biological and physical-chemical), with overall state of good or better according to the Tenerife Hydrological Plan (December 2018). No contamination episodes detected.

Risks

Multiple point sources of contamination identified: wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) Polígono La Campana, submarine outfall (planned), ETAR Radazul, EBAR Radazul relief valve, Radazul submarine outfall, salt water pool at Club Náutico de Radazul, Club de Mar Radazul relief valve, and Puertito Radazul relief valve. Diffuse contamination source: Radazul sports marina. Two drainage basins: Barranco del Chorrillo and Barranco La Teja. Expected short-duration contamination events: stormwater discharge from heavy rain (sporadic, less than 72 hours); raw or treated urban wastewater from pipeline breaks or network failures (unforeseeable, less than 72 hours); accidental hydrocarbon or organic waste discharge and ship cleaning (unforeseeable, less than 72 hours); discharge of chlorinated salt water from pool emptying or filter cleaning (sporadic, less than 24 hours). Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017 (Trichodesmium species). No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
