Playa Ojos de Garza is a coastal bathing area located in Telde, Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach stretches 450 metres in length with a width of 45 metres and features golden sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with tidal ranges of 1 to 3 metres. The beach is designated for swimming during the official season from 1 June to 30 September.

Coastal water body classified as ES70GCTIV2 - East coastal/natural surface coastal type. Water depth ranges from 0 to -9 metres. The coastal water mass is in good ecological status with good or better overall state. Moderate wave regime with exposure to waves. Tidal range of 1 to 3 metres.

Location

Telde municipality, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is accessible on foot via good pedestrian access. Vehicle access is available but rated as poor. Parking is available but of poor quality.

Showers available. Toilets not available. Changing rooms not available. Public telephone available. Waste bins available. Bars available. No lifeguards. No medical attention. No disabled access. No public water supply. No foot wash facility.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to RD 1341/2007. The coastal water mass ES70GCTIV2 presents good ecological state. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred in August 2011, June 2019, and May 2020, all of short duration.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include the Ojos de Garza wastewater treatment plant, sewage network, agricultural desalination plant discharge from Barranco del Draguillo, Hoya Cabrera desalination plant, and Base Aérea de Gando wastewater treatment facilities. Contamination episodes of short duration are expected to occur sporadically from stormwater runoff during heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater discharge, and brine discharge from desalination facilities. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No macroalgae risk.
