Playa Salinetas is a 350-metre-long coastal beach in Telde, Gran Canaria, with a 50-metre width and golden sand substrate. The beach is exposed to moderate wave action with tidal ranges of 1–3 metres. It is designated for various water activities including bodyboarding, kayaking, canoeing, diving, and surfing. The official swimming season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Water

Coastal water body classified as ES70GCTIV2 (east coast natural superficial coastal water). Depth ranges from 0 to -10 metres. The beach is 350 metres long and 50 metres wide with golden sand substrate. Exposure to waves is high, and wave action is moderate with current regime and 1–3 metre tidal range.

Location

Playa Salinetas is located in Telde municipality, Las Palmas province, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. The nearest locality is Melenara. The beach has good pedestrian and vehicular access, a maritime promenade, and good parking facilities.

Facilities

Public water supply with potable water, showers, foot-washing facilities, public services, toilets, containers, public telephone, health care, lifeguards, bars, waste bins, and disabled access (regular condition). Facilities are available; however, changing rooms and beach umbrella, canopy, and lounger rentals are not provided.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators over four years according to RD1341/2007. The coastal water mass ES70GCTIV2 is in good ecological status with good or better total status according to the Gran Canaria Hydrological Plan. Short-duration microbiological contamination episodes occurred in October–November 2015, September 2018, and September 2021, typically caused by heavy rainfall or urban sewage discharge.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources include Salinetas Port, Taliarte Fishing Port, and Taliarte Sports Nautical Club. Point pollution sources include septic tanks in Las Clavellinas and the Salinetas Industrial Polygon, brine discharge from EDAM Telde II, and sewage from Silva watercourse (Ojos de Garza and Silva wastewater treatment plants). Two watercourses drain to the beach: Barranquillo de Sacateclas and Barranco del Negro. Short-duration microbiological contamination is expected sporadically from stormwater runoff carrying contaminants and from raw or treated urban wastewater. Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) episodes occurred in 2004, 2010, and intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins; no risk from macroalgae.
