Playa Otur is a coastal bathing beach in Valdés, Asturias, measuring 600 metres in length with variable width of up to 180 metres. The beach features fine dark sand and is subject to macrotidal conditions exceeding 4 metres. Water renewal occurs in less than 7 days with moderate wave conditions. The beach has received Blue Flag designation since 2010 and maintains excellent water quality.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent. All microbiological sanitary controls at sampling point PM1 have returned excellent results. No historical contamination episodes recorded. Blue Flag designation awarded since 2010 through 2017. Risk of insufficient water quality assessed as very low.

Risks

Arroyo de la Pedrera stream discharges at the beach and may occasionally carry runoff from adjacent agricultural properties and tourist complexes, causing short-duration contamination episodes with increased enterobacterial counts and turbidity. Biennial frequency with duration under 8 hours. Risk assessed as low. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is null. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low, associated with natural phenomena from storms. Jellyfish proliferations are infrequent; Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis) sightings are mostly isolated specimens. One recorded incident in July 2008; summer 2012 was exceptional with multiple jellyfish species but no subsequent recorded sightings at this beach.
