Playa Pila de la Barrilla is a coastal bathing zone located on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach measures 90 metres in length and 22 metres in width, featuring fine golden sand and rock substrate. It is exposed to wave action with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The swimming season runs from February 1 to November 30. Activities permitted include surfing, diving, and water sports equipment rental.

Coastal marine water body classified as ES70LZTIV—East of Lanzarote natural shallow coastal mass. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −4 metres depth. The water exhibits calm conditions with a tidal range of 1–3 metres and is exposed to wave action.

Location

The beach is located in the municipality of Tías on Lanzarote island (Las Palmas province) in the Canary Islands, near Puerto del Carmen. Vehicle access and a car park with fewer than 50 spaces are available. A promenade provides pedestrian access, and disabled access is available.

Facilities

Showers, foot-washing facilities, changing rooms, bars, waste bins, public telephone, lifeguards, health care, umbrella rental, and sun lounger rental are available. Drinking water from mains distribution is not reported.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) measured over four years and evaluated according to RD1341/2007. The underlying water mass is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical). Microbiological contamination episodes occurred on 28–29 August 2017 and 6–8 November 2017, both of short duration.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include the Puerto del Carmen commercial port and Calero Marina sports port, a submarine outfall at Puerto del Carmen, and five point sources (two EBARs, one hotel pool discharge, and two additional EBARs). Potential short-duration contamination risks include stormwater runoff from heavy rain, raw or treated urban sewage from outfall ruptures or sanitation network failures, brine discharge from desalination plants, accidental hydrocarbon spills, and saline water discharge from pool emptying. Cyanobacterial proliferation (Trichodesmium) episodes were recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae is reported.
