Poniente is a 885-meter-long urban beach in Motril, Granada, located along the Mediterranean coast of Andalusia. The beach has a mean width of 80 meters with dark sand and gravel composition. Bathing conditions feature moderate wave exposure, with currents dominant toward the northeast. The beach is moderately occupied and benefits from a seafront promenade with boardwalks and comprehensive urban infrastructure.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water. Deep water bathymetry with mud and sand substrate. Micro-tidal range of 0–2 meters. Currents are dominant toward the northeast. Wave regime is dominant from the east and east-southeast, associated with levante wind. Moderately wave-exposed coastal water influenced by Atlantic waters.

Location

Motril, Granada, Andalusia, Spain. Access on foot is easy, and vehicle access is available. Disabled access is provided.

Red Cross station, rescue equipment, surveillance team, signage, boardwalks, disabled access, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, water sports rental, seafront promenade.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for all monitoring seasons 2013–2016. Short-duration microbiological contamination risk is moderate. Diffuse pollution sources include land uses, built surfaces, altered areas, and agricultural surfaces in the influence zone. Point sources include Torraspapel Motril (industrial process) and Motril wastewater treatment plant (urban treated discharge). A watercourse (Rambla) is present.
