Playa Poo is a 150-meter-long, 100-meter-wide natural sandy beach located in Llanes, Asturias, on the northern coast of Spain. The beach experiences a macrotidal regime with tidal amplitude exceeding 4 meters. The surrounding area is dominated by agricultural and livestock operations with eucalyptus plantations and is characterized by semi-urban development. Water renewal occurs within 7 days, and wave conditions are generally calm. The beach experiences high occupancy levels, particularly during summer months.

Location

The beach is located in the village of Poo, municipality of Llanes, Asturias, Spain. Road access is available with parking for over 100 vehicles. Pedestrian access is good.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as Good for bathing in 2017. A contamination episode occurred in summer 2018 when Escherichia coli levels exceeded maximum limits. The primary contamination sources are the Poo estuary, which receives industrial discharges, infiltrations, and runoff from adjacent agricultural properties, and a local sewage pumping/overflow system located 469 meters from the primary sampling point. Overall contamination risk is classified as medium.

Medium risk of contamination episodes. Primary sources: discharges and infiltrations from the Poo estuary, and failures or overflow events from the local sewage pumping system. Low risk of microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation. Low risk of jellyfish blooms, although Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis) sightings occur occasionally during spring-summer months, with isolated incidents recorded in 2008, 2010, and 2012. Summer months are most susceptible to water quality degradation due to tourist saturation and river discharge near the beach margin.
