Coastal water body in the Western Cantabrian hydrographic district. Length 100 m, width 84 m (variable). Macrotidal range exceeding 4 meters. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Wind speed average 5.24 m/s. Current direction west-northwest. Natural composition of white-golden sand. Wave conditions variable from calm to strong.

Location

Located in Celorio, municipality of Llanes, Asturias, Spain. Good pedestrian access and road access available. Parking available with fewer than 50 spaces.

Lifeguards (Salvamento), Red Cross (Cruz Roja), Police, toilets, showers.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for bathing based on recent monitoring results. Awarded Blue Flag distinction in 2007, 2008, and 2010. Microbiological monitoring at sampling point PM3 shows excellent sanitary quality. Risk of insufficient water quality classified as very low.

Risks

Sewage pumping/overflow station located 105 meters from sampling point PM3. Risk from this source classified as low with potential for exceptional discharges due to pump failures lasting less than 8 hours. Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis) recorded in 4 specimens during 2008 and 2010. Summer 2012 exceptional for jellyfish species including sail (Velella velella), sea carnation (Pelagia noctiluca), and umbrella jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), with some red flag warnings issued. Aequorea forskalea jellyfish banks recorded in 2016. Macroalgae and jellyfish proliferation risk classified as low.
