Playa de Porcía is a coastal bathing area located in El Franco, Asturias, Spain. The beach is 240 meters long and 69 meters wide with a natural golden sand composition. Water quality has improved significantly over the past four years and is now classified as excellent at monitoring point PM1 and good at PM2. The beach experiences moderate tidal ranges of 2–4 meters and has water renewal times of less than 7 days.

Location

El Franco, Asturias, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian access and road access with parking available for fewer than 50 vehicles.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent at PM1 and Good at PM2 over the last 3 years. Contamination risk is moderate. The Porcía River estuary historically caused elevated concentrations of enteric bacteria, but water quality has improved significantly. The Porcía River discharges at the beach and is the principal source of local influence on bathing water quality. Contamination episodes are short-duration events originating from agricultural runoff, illegal discharges, and sewage from nearby farms and the town of El Franco.

Risks

Moderate risk of short-duration contamination episodes caused by high concentrations of enteric bacteria from the Porcía River estuary. These episodes may result from agricultural seepage, illegal discharges, and stormwater runoff from surrounding farmland. Risk of microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation is low. Risk of macroalgae proliferation is low, occurring mainly during storms. Risk of jellyfish proliferation is null, although occasional sightings can occur in spring and summer months.
