Playa El Puerto de Tazacorte is a 400-metre-long beach located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a dark fine sand and gravel substrate and is sheltered from wave exposure. It experiences moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The beach is used for water activities including kitesurfing, skating, and canoeing, as well as beach football.

Water

Coastal marine water body classified as ES70LPTII - Southwest/Natural coastal surface. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −20 metres depth. Wave regime is moderate. Current regime is present. Tidal range is 1–3 metres. The water body is classified as being in good ecological state according to the Hydrological Plan of La Palma.

Location

Located in Tazacorte municipality on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands. The beach has good pedestrian and vehicular access. Parking is available but rated as regular quality. A promenade runs along the beach.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Public water supply with potable water available. Showers, foot-washing facilities, toilets, and changing rooms provided. Health care services available. Disabled access available (good). Bars, waste bins, and public telephone available. Umbrella and lounger rental available. No megaphone system. No awning rental.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on faecal contamination indicators Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci measured over four years according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. A microbiological contamination episode of short duration occurred on 8–10 July 2013. The surface water mass is in good ecological state (biological and physical-chemical), with overall good or better status.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources include Tazacorte port, marine aquaculture (Acuipalma SL), and intensive agricultural zones using nitrogen and phosphorus-rich fertilizers. Point pollution sources include submarine outfall Tazacorte and relief overflow Tazacorte from wastewater treatment plants. Barranco Las Angustias and Barranco Tenisca are potential contamination pathways. Possible contamination from stormwater runoff, urban wastewater, accidental hydrocarbon spills, fishing waste, and marine culture biological residues. Volcanic eruption on 24 September 2021 posed respiratory, ocular, and skin risks from volcanic gases and ash, with recommendations against bathing. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins.
