Puerto Espíndola is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 200 meters long and 26 meters wide, with dark sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave action and has a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The water body is a natural coastal surface water mass classified as being in good ecological condition. Swimming is monitored from June 1 to September 30 each year.

Puerto Espíndola is located in the municipality of San Andrés y Sauces on the island of La Palma in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The nearest town is Los Sauces. Pedestrian and vehicle access are both available and in good condition. Parking is available and in good condition.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on analysis of fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) collected over four years in accordance with Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological state (biological and physicochemical). No previous pollution episodes are documented. Cyanobacteria proliferation events (Trichodesmium) were recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources include the Puerto Espíndola sport and fishing port and intensive agriculture with phosphorus and nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Point pollution sources include submarine discharge, Los Sauces wastewater treatment plant collectors, residential discharge from lower San Andrés y Sauces, and San Andrés macrophyte wastewater treatment plant. Storm water discharge from heavy rainfall can transport contaminants. Raw or treated urban wastewater from pipe breakages, system failures, or emergency overflows may occur. Accidental hydrocarbon discharge, fishing activity waste, and ship cleaning discharge are possible. Volcanic eruption on September 24, 2021 posed respiratory, ocular, and skin risks from volcanic gas and ash exposure, making beach use not recommended during that period.
