Merón is a sandy beach located in San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria, with a length of 2,500 metres and average width of 40 metres. The beach has medium occupancy and a semi-urban setting, characterized by strong waves and wind conditions. Water quality has consistently been classified as excellent or very good, with low bacterial contamination levels recorded since 2005.

Water

Coastal maritime water body in the Cantabrian Sea, part of the Cantabrico hydrographic demarcation. The beach consists of white sand with a length of 2,500 metres and average width of 40 metres.

Location

San Vicente de la Barquera, Cantabria. The beach is served by the CN-634 road and interurban bus transport. Parking is available with more than 100 spaces.

Facilities

Lifeguards, toilets, showers, blue flag status, public telephone, rubbish bins, rescue equipment, and local police presence. Disabled access available. No beach umbrella or hammock rental services.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent or very good from 2005 onwards. Annual classification: very good in 2005–2010, excellent in 2011. Chlorophyll-a concentration in the coastal water station around 1.5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries below 5,000,000 cells/l. Six urban and aquaculture discharge points are monitored continuously in the vicinity.

Risks

Strong wave conditions and wind are typical. Low risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE. Chlorophyll-a concentrations and phytoplankton densities remain well below concerning levels.
