Isla Canela is a 3,345-metre-long natural coastal beach in Ayamonte, Huelva, located along the Atlantic coast of the Gulf of Cádiz. The beach features golden sand with a mean width of 20 metres and shallow waters with a mesomareal tidal range of 2–4 metres. Swimming conditions are characterised by calm waters with moderate wave exposure dominated by westerly winds. The beach is urbanised with a promenade and moderate occupancy levels.

Water

Atlantic coastal waters in the Gulf of Cádiz. The water mass is classified as 400017 Isla Cristina. Bathymetry consists of shallow waters with a sandy substrate. Mean tidal range is 2–4 metres (mesomareal). Currents are dominant towards the south, south-southeast, and southeast. Wave regime is dominated by westerly winds with secondary waves from the southeast.

Location

Ayamonte, Huelva province, Andalusia. The beach begins at coordinates 110590/4123125 and ends at 113494/4122900 (UTM zone 30, ETRS 89). A maritime promenade and boardwalks provide access to the beach.

Red Cross post, lifeguards, rescue equipment, signage, disabled access, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, watersports rental, boardwalks, and maritime promenade.

Water Quality

Water quality was classified as excellent for all four monitoring seasons from 2013 to 2016. Short-duration contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature (24-hour effect). The primary point source is the Ayamonte wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Ayamonte HU201). Diffuse pollution sources include land use in the influence zone, built-up surfaces, and altered areas. The Guadiana River is the main fluvial course affecting the area.

Risks

Risk of macroalgae proliferation is medium. Risk of jellyfish and phytoplankton proliferation is low.
