Playa San Telmo is a coastal bathing beach located in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. The beach is 30 metres long and 25 metres wide with a dark gravel and sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a tidal range of 1–3 metres and depths ranging from 0 to 18 metres. The official swimming season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to RD 1341/2007. Short-duration microbiological contamination episodes occurred in November 2018, August 2019, September 2020, and March and October 2021.

Risks

Identified pollution sources: diffuse source from Puerto de la Cruz port; point sources including EBAR San Telmo relief valve and multiple discharges from Lago Martiánez swimming pools. Short-duration microbiological contamination from raw or treated urban wastewater (outlet breaks, sewage system failures, overflows/emergencies, unauthorised discharges), accidental hydrocarbon spills and organic waste, and salt water discharge from pool draining and filter cleaning. Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
