Playa Serantes is a 200-meter-long natural sandy beach in Tapia de Casariego, Asturias, facing the western Cantabrian coast. The beach experiences macrotidal conditions with tidal ranges exceeding 4 metres and moderate to windy wave conditions. Water renewal time is less than 7 days. The area has high occupancy levels and is characterized as isolated in terms of urbanization.

Water

Coastal water body, 200 metres long and 142 metres wide (highly variable). Sandy composition with golden sand. Part of the Western Coast water body (16003). Water renewal time less than 7 days. Current direction is west-northwest. Mean wind speed 5.24 m/s. Macrotidal regime with tidal amplitude exceeding 4 metres.

Location

Tapia de Casariego municipality, Asturias, Spain. The beach is accessible by road with 50–100 parking spaces and has good pedestrian access. Showers and disabled access facilities are available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Sufficient based on microbiological analyses. Moderate contamination risk identified due to discharges from the Tol river estuary. The Tol river mouth discharges treated wastewater from a small wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) containing high concentrations of fecal bacteria, combined with seepage from agro-livestock operations. Water samples show occasional peaks of high enteric bacteria concentrations. The beach was closed to bathing in July 2018 following detection of fecal bacteria.

Risks

Moderate risk of short-duration contamination episodes from the Tol river discharge and agricultural seepage with enteric bacteria and fecal waste. Frequency is weekly with duration under 8 hours. Effects include increased enteric bacteria, odour, and turbidity reducing visual and sanitary quality. Risk of jellyfish proliferation is nil. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is nil. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low and associated with natural weather phenomena.
