Playa del Tarajal is a bathing water zone located in Ceuta, oriented toward the south within the South Bay water body. The beach is approximately 300 meters in length. The area has a Mediterranean climate with two distinct seasons: a cool and humid period from October to April, and a dry and warm period from May to September. Water temperature varies between 17–18°C at the surface.

Water

South Bay (Bahía Sur) in the Strait of Gibraltar. Surface temperature ranges from 17–18°C, with bottom temperature around 16.5°C. A thermocline is present at 4–5 meters depth. Salinity ranges from 35.6 to 36.8 practical salinity units (u.p.s.). Dissolved oxygen concentration remains close to 100% throughout the water column.

Location

Ceuta, southern orientation. Geographic limits defined by UTM coordinates (zone 30): x = 288.665, y = 3.972.656 and x = 288.545, y = 3.972.407. The monitoring point is located at x = 288.593, y = 3.972.541.

Water Quality

The Margalef index indicates some eutrophication originating from anthropogenic inputs, particularly at shallower depths and closer to the coast. However, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate concentrations remain well below quality objectives established for coastal waters, with many measurement points not exceeding detection limits. Water quality is assessed during monitoring campaigns, with results available for the mollusk production zone CE-01 (February 2006–July 2007) and the preliminary zone CE-02 in the south bay.

Risks

Jellyfish proliferation has been documented since 2006, with data on incidence and abundance recorded during bathing seasons.
