The beach is designated as a Special Conservation Zone and forms part of the Natural Monument of Entrepeñes and Playa de Vega due to its ecological and landscape qualities, including dune complexes and cliffs.

Mean wind velocity 5.24 m/s. Current direction west-northwest. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Strong wave conditions.

Location

The beach is located in La Vega, municipality of Ribadesella, Asturias, Spain. Access is available by road with parking for over 100 vehicles and good pedestrian access.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for bathing based on recent microbiological parameter analysis. Sanitary quality results are excellent at monitoring point PM1. Risk of water quality becoming insufficient is assessed as low. Potential pollution sources include the Vega River and an industrial submarine outfall located 1 kilometre away, but their influence is limited by water renewal time and current patterns.

Risks

The Vega River discharges into the beach and can transport contaminated water from agricultural holdings through filtration and runoff, potentially increasing enteric bacteria levels. Short-duration contamination episodes possible with biennial frequency and duration under 24 hours. Industrial submarine outfall 1,033 metres from monitoring point PM1 can cause anomalous situations through point currents or collector failures, with contamination episodes under 48 hours duration and low risk. Jellyfish occurrences are infrequent; Portuguese man o' war and other species occasionally appear during spring-summer months but restrictions to bathing are rare. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation is not likely due to short water renewal time and absence of estuary. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low.
