Zahara de los Atunes is a 1,515-meter-long beach located in Barbate, Cádiz, along the Atlantic coast of Andalucía. The beach features golden sand with rocky substrate and has a mean width of 70 meters. Swimming conditions are characterized by moderate waves and windy exposure. The beach is semi-urbanized with medium occupancy and is influenced by both Atlantic and Mediterranean water characteristics.

Water

Coastal Atlantic waters influenced by Mediterranean water masses. Shallow waters with sand and rock substrate. Meso-tidal regime with tidal range of 2-4 meters. Current regime is dominant towards south, south-southeast, and southeast. Wave regime is dominant from the west and secondarily from the southeast. Annual precipitation is 400-600 mm with torrential index of 25-50%.

Location

Located in Barbate municipality, Cádiz province, Andalucía. Access is available on foot or by car. The nearby Barbate Sports Port is located in the area.

Facilities

Red Cross post, lifeguard equipment, surveillance equipment, toilet facilities, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, and boardwalks are available. Disabled access is not provided. Danger signage is displayed. No nautical rental, nautical club, or underwater diving zone.

Water Quality

Water quality classification was Excellent for all monitoring seasons from 2013 to 2016. Short-duration contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature, with a 24-hour duration window. Diffuse pollution sources include land use in the influence zone, forest surfaces, and natural areas. The Calandar stream is present in the area.

Risks

Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.
