Zahora is a natural Atlantic coastal beach in the Gulf of Cádiz, located in the municipality of Barbate in Andalucía. The beach extends for 2,285 metres with an average width of 40 metres and features golden sand with rocky patches. It is exposed to moderate waves and windy conditions, with shallow waters and a mesotidal range of 2–4 metres. The beach is situated in a protected natural area designated as a Site of Community Importance and Monument.

Water

Atlantic coastal water body, shallow waters (batimetry classified as shallow). Substrate comprises sand with rocks. Tidal range is mesotidal (2–4 metres). Dominant currents flow south, south-southeast, and southeast. Wave exposure is moderate to very high, with dominant waves from the west and secondary waves from the southeast.

Location

Zahora is located in Barbate, Cádiz Province, Andalucía. Vehicle access is available. The beach is isolated with minimal urbanization.

Facilities

Toilets available. Litter bins provided. Cleaning service operates. No lifeguard service, no rescue equipment, no showers, no disabled access, no warning signage, and no nautical facilities.

Water quality classification: Excellent (2013–2016 monitoring period). Low microbiological contamination risk from short-term sources. Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.

Risks

Low short-term microbiological contamination risk. Diffuse pollution sources from land uses, forested areas, and natural surfaces in the zone of influence. Moderate wave conditions and windy exposure present swimming challenges.
