Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Weekly sampling is conducted. In the 2024 bathing season, bathing was advised against or prohibited for 7 days due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution is likely, occurring during precipitation when microbiological load is carried into the river, and from discharges of untreated effluent during pumping station failures or rainwater network contamination. Faecal contamination may originate from improper inflows into upstream streams or the rainwater drainage network. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no recorded history of occurrence.
