Ponte Frades is a rural beach featuring an extensive lawn and forest area in the Douro River basin. The bathing water is monitored biweekly during the official swimming season. The site is located in Vinhais municipality in northern Portugal.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing prohibition or advisory against bathing occurred due to short-term pollution events during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution events lasting up to 72 hours are unlikely but could occur during precipitation through microbiological load discharge into the river or upstream water streams, or in case of malfunction of sanitation infrastructure located upstream. Potential faecal contamination sources include untreated clandestine discharges. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation are unlikely.
