Pors Kernok is a sandy beach located on the Île de Batz that is officially designated for bathing. The beach is enclosed, meaning pollutions tend to persist longer in the bathing zone. Water quality monitoring from 2005 to 2010 showed good to average quality under the previous directive, with classification as good quality in 2010 under the newer 2006/7/CE directive.

Sandy beach in an enclosed cove. The beach is subject to tidal and wind-driven water transport, with hydrodynamic conditions influenced by southwesterly winds that tend to direct pollution toward the coast and northwesterly/northeasterly winds that tend to disperse pollution seaward.

Location

Île de Batz commune. The beach has a geographic position on an island with a terrain featuring rocky promontories and sandy coves.

Water Quality

Water quality classification under Directive 76/160/CEE: good to average quality from 2005–2010. Under Directive 2006/7/CE (4-year classification method): good quality in 2010. Microbiological data from 2005–2010 exceeded AFSSET threshold for enterococci twice. Identified pollution sources include storm water outfalls, potential discharge from port pumping station, birds, port activities, and hydrocarbons.

Risks

Bacterial contamination risks from storm water outlets, possible discharge from the port pumping station, seabirds, and port operations. Hydrocarbon contamination. Enclosed beach morphology causes pollutants to persist longer. Heavy rainfall events can mobilize pollutants; however, summer rainfall is rare (70% of rainfall events less than 1 mm). Short-term pollution events may occur.
