Plage des Salins – Port Pothuau is a bathing beach in Hyères, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region in southern France. The beach is 1.5 km long with a sand and small pebble composition, featuring very gentle slopes both above and below the waterline. It faces south with an open configuration and receives medium visitor frequency. The beach is managed as a concession by the Métropole authority, with the town of Hyères exercising police powers over the water area to 300 meters.

Water

Open-water bathing zone with very gentle slopes. Watershed basin area of 13.6 km². Beach width varies from 5 to 50 meters.

Location

Located in Hyères, Var department, south of France at coordinates N 43°06'56.0" - E 6°12'12.0". Access is via Boulevard Eole parking lot. Parking is available on-site.

Facilities

Rescue post with 2 lifeguards. Accessible parking. 1 PMR ramp access to water. Disabled-access equipment for entering water. 4 showers (accessible to disabled users). 2 toilets (1 disabled-accessible). Drinking water point. Selective waste collection and general waste bins. Restaurant on-site. No animal access permitted.

Season

Annual monitoring period: 1 July to 31 August. Daily monitoring: 10:00 to 19:00.

Water Quality

2022 water quality classification: Excellent according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is conducted by ARS (health authority) and auto-surveillance by TPM contractor. No chemical pollution was recorded in 2020–2022. No biological pollution was recorded in 2020–2022. Closures occurred on 28/06/2022 and 17/08/2022 due to adverse weather conditions and poor ARS results, and on 14/09/2022 for precautionary reasons following unfavourable weather.

Risks

Two forced discharge pumping stations (Poste de relevage Les Salins - Port Pothuau and Poste de relevage Les Salins Simone Berriau) present potential for polluted water discharge in case of malfunction, pump failure, power outage, or overflow during heavy rainfall events. Risk evaluation identified these as the primary potential pollution sources, though actual contamination was not recorded in recent years.
