Porthor lies on the north coast of the Llŷn peninsula, known locally for its "whistling sands." A National Trust car park at the top of the access road has toilets, with a tarmac lane leading steeply down to the sandy beach. A small café sits near the entrance, and rocks with tidal pools are found at the eastern end.
