Porto Badisco-Scalo di Enea is a rocky coastal bathing area in the municipality of Otranto, Lecce province, in the Puglia region of Italy. The water body is classified as excellent quality based on 2017-2020 monitoring data. The area is part of the Otranto-Santa Maria di Leuca water body and the Poggiardo hydrographic basin.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017-2020). No direct wastewater discharges reach the sea. No river mouths or canals convey pollutants to the bathing area. No short-term pollution events recorded in the past four years.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused mortality and distress in marine organisms including starfish, sea urchins, crabs, and cephalopod molluscs. Bathers have experienced transient symptoms including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during periods of elevated Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly following storms when marine aerosol formation spreads toxins through the air. The area is not characterized by cyanobacterial blooms.
