Porto Novo is a medium-size sandy beach embedded in a small bay at the mouth of Rio Alcabrichel, surrounded by cliffs forming a sheltered area with calm water. The beach is located in Torres Vedras municipality and has held the QualityCoast award since 2009. Prehistoric cave remains can be found in the surrounding area.

Coastal bathing water (CWB-II-4) located in the Ribeiras do Oeste river basin, at the mouth of Rio Alcabrichel.

Location

Torres Vedras municipality. Coordinates: LAT 39.177834°, LONG -9.356848° (ETRS89).

Season

June 12th to September 12th (2021 season). Sampling frequency: triweekly.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2020 was established under Decreto-Lei 135/09. Contamination risk is very low based on historical water quality data. Potential microbiological pollution sources include the Rio Alcabrichel river during heavy rainfall or when the river mouth is opened to the sea.

Risks

Low risk of short-term pollution events lasting 1–2 days may occur due to excessive river discharge during rainfall or when the river mouth is opened. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation are all unlikely. No bathing advisories or prohibitions were issued during the 2020 bathing season due to short-term pollution events.
