Riccione - Porto Canale 100m N is a sandy beach bathing area in Riccione, Emilia-Romagna region, extending for approximately 300 metres along the central-southern coastal area. The beach is unprotected by cliffs and presents as a high-use tourist zone with numerous hotels and beach establishments. A lifeguard service operates constantly during the bathing season.

Water

Coastal marine waters in a flat alluvial area with high stability. The bathing area extends over 0.310 km. The area is subject to sand replenishment interventions.

Location

Located in Riccione municipality in the province of Rimini, Emilia-Romagna region. The bathing area is situated 100 metres north of Porto Canale and borders the Riccione harbour area to the south. The beach width varies between 80–100 metres.

Facilities

Six beach establishments present with first aid services. Facilities include toilet services accessible to disabled persons, hot showers, absence of architectural barriers, sports structures, and refreshment points. Animal access is regulated by Regional Bathing Water Ordinance and municipal ordinances.

Season

Bathing season monitoring period 2019–2022. Profile update and review scheduled for 2027.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is Excellent (reference years 2019–2022). Escherichia coli: 90th percentile 84 CFU/100ml, 95th percentile 123 CFU/100ml. Enterococci intestinali: 90th percentile 24 CFU/100ml, 95th percentile 30 CFU/100ml. No watercourses or direct discharges deliver into the bathing water profile, and no direct discharge pollution sources are present in the bathing area. An anomalous situation occurred in 2022 with exceedance of Escherichia coli limits on 26 July 2022, declared as an anomalous situation by the European Commission.

Risks

The Rio Melo and Riccione harbour area lie to the south of the bathing area. During intense precipitation, overflow discharges from sewerage networks and pumping stations may activate, discharging excess flows into Rio Melo, whose waters flow into Porto Canale and reach the sea near the bathing water. The Castrocaro pumping station represents a potential discharge point in the terminal section of Rio Melo. The presence of Rio Melo and the harbour may cause eutrophication phenomena. No cyanobacteria-sustained eutrophic phenomena have been reported. No phytoplankton bloom events or macroalgae blooms were recorded during 2019–2022.
