Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Riedsee Leeheim is a quarry lake created from gravel extraction located in the Upper Rhine Plain in Hesse, Germany. The lake covers 24 hectares with a maximum depth of 22.1 meters and average depth of 9.1 meters. Its clear water and stable summer temperature stratification support excellent water quality. The swimming area features a 125-meter sand beach and a 150-meter lawn area, with the remainder of the shoreline in its natural state with reed vegetation.

Water

Quarry lake (Baggersee) with a surface area of 24 hectares, maximum depth of 22.1 meters, and average depth of 9.1 meters. Located in the Upper Rhine Plain in areas of thick sand layers. The lake is oligotrophic and benefits from stable temperature stratification during summer months.

Location

Located 18 kilometers east of Darmstadt and 18 kilometers south of Rüsselsheim. The bathing area is on the northern shore, approximately 500 meters east of Riedstadt-Leeheim. Access is via the L3096 road from Leeheim toward Geinsheim, leading directly to a car park. A camping site is located near the beach.

Facilities

Toilets, showers, and a kiosk are available. Average daily visitor count is approximately 900 swimmers.

Season

1 April 2026 to 21 September 2026.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent quality. Water is consistently low in indicator bacteria (enterococci and E. coli). No known pollution sources from wastewater, stormwater, or runoff. Nutrient loading is very low. No cyanobacteria blooms have been observed during bathing seasons. No management measures are required for this water body.
