Schwimmbad Vogel is a bathing lake located in the Hessian Ried region, approximately 38 km southwest of Frankfurt and 22 km west of Darmstadt. The lake, formed in a former gravel pit, has a water surface area of 3.5 hectares with a maximum depth of 6.25 meters and average depth of 3 meters. The bathing area features two sand beaches of 40 meters and 30 meters in length, with adjacent meadows for sunbathing. The shoreline is densely vegetated with reeds and water lilies, and the lake is also used for fishing. Water quality is generally very good, with bathing access restricted to the designated beach area.

Water

Baggersee (gravel pit lake) with a water surface area of 3.5 hectares, maximum depth of 6.25 meters, and average depth of 3 meters. Located in the Upper Rhine Plain in an area of thick sand deposits. The shallow depth prevents stable temperature stratification in summer, causing the entire water volume to warm significantly and releasing nutrients from the bottom sediment.

Location

Located near Geinsheim in Trebur municipality, Hesse. Access via Hessenauerstraße from the L3094 between Geinsheim and Oppenheim, via the northern corner of the lake. Parking and facilities are available at the bathing area.

Toilets, showers, kiosk. Average daily visitor count approximately 80.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Ausgezeichnete Qualität) for 2021–2025. Monitoring includes testing for Enterococcus and Escherichia coli. Low to moderate nutrient loading. Trophic classification: mesotrophic 2. Risk of cyanobacterial mass occurrence: low. Observed cyanobacterial mass occurrence during bathing season: low. No known contamination from wastewater, stormwater, or surface runoff.

Risks

Slightly elevated algae and cyanobacterial development during summer months. Cyanobacteria can release substances harmful to bathers, potentially causing allergic reactions or skin irritation. Alga and cyanobacteria concentrations typically increase toward the end of the bathing season. When critical concentrations are detected, the health authority provides behavioral guidance to bathers.
