The Río Bullaque bathing areas near Piedrabuena in Ciudad Real, Spain comprise three designated swimming zones: Tabla La Yedra (B1), La Fuente (C1), and Puente Nuevo (D1). The river is a low mountain Mediterranean siliceous watercourse with single channel and low sinuosity, featuring large marginal and central bars. The bed substrate consists of sedimentary detrite composed of gravels, pebbles, sand, silt and clay. The areas are well-conserved natural habitats with riparian vegetation, only altered by bridge construction at one location.

Water

The Río Bullaque is a river classified as low mountain Mediterranean siliceous watercourse. The bathing areas are formed by natural pools called 'tablas' that act as natural dams during summer. Embalsed water volume is approximately 30,000 m³ at zones B1 and C1, and 7,000 m³ at zone D1. Environmental flow rate is 0.45 m³/s. Mean annual discharge is 4.48 m³/s. Four-year return period discharge is 59 m³/s (B1-C1) and 250 m³/s flood discharge. The catchment area is 1,783.9 km² with maximum altitude 1,416 m and minimum altitude 550 m.

Location

The bathing areas are located approximately 4 km northwest of Piedrabuena in Ciudad Real, accessed via the CR-721 road in the direction of Arroba de los Montes. Tabla La Yedra and La Fuente are accessible via a left turn at kilometre 4, while Puente Nuevo is accessed via a dirt track at kilometre 5, situated beneath the road bridge that crosses the river. Parking is available at Tabla La Yedra; the other two zones have no parking facilities.

Facilities

Tabla La Yedra (B1): parking, bar/snack bar, picnic areas, toilets, information signs, waste baskets, waste containers, boat landing. La Fuente (C1): information signs only. Puente Nuevo (D1): no facilities. Estimated bathers: B1 weekend 40/weekday 20; C1 weekend 20/weekday 10; D1 weekend 15/weekday 10. Lifeguard stations, showers, and disabled access are not available at any location.

Risks

Zone D1 exhibits water stagnation due to very slow renewal of water volumes. Algal coverings and deposited mud are present in the riverbed, particularly in the bridge area, and are easily disturbed when entering the water.
