Spain River 1 - Excellent

Three bathing zones on the Río Bullaque near Piedrabuena in Ciudad Real, Spain. The bathing areas comprise Tabla La Yedra (B1), La Fuente (C1), and Puente Nuevo (D1). The river is a low-mountain Mediterranean siliceous watercourse with single channel and low sinuosity, featuring large marginal and central bars with detrital substrate composed of gravel, stones, sand, silt and clay. The zones form natural reservoirs during summer months. Wildlife includes crayfish, kingfisher, otter, boga fish and grebes.

Water

River (Río Bullaque). Bathing zones B1 and C1 form natural reservoirs with 30,000 m³ embalsed volume. Zone D1 contains 7,000 m³. Average annual discharge 4.48 m³/s. Summer discharge 0.12 m³/s. Environmental flow 0.45 m³/s. Four-year return period discharge 59 m³/s at B1-C1 and 250 m³/s at B1-C1. Substrate comprises coarse sands and rounded stones in river section; algal coverings and deposits in bridge area.

Location

Northwest of Piedrabuena, Ciudad Real, approximately 4 km via road CR-721. From Piedrabuena, follow directions to Tabla la Yedra on CR-721 toward Arroba de los Montes. At kilometre 4 a left turn leads to Tabla La Yedra and La Fuente. At kilometre 5 another left turn on a dirt track leads 20 metres to Puente Nuevo beneath the road bridge crossing the river. Parking available at Tabla La Yedra (B1). No parking at La Fuente (C1) or Puente Nuevo (D1).

Facilities

B1 (Tabla La Yedra): Parking, bar/snack bar, picnic tables, toilets, waste bins, containers, information signs, jetty. Estimated bathers 40 weekends / 20 weekdays. C1 (La Fuente): Information signs only. Estimated bathers 20 weekends / 10 weekdays. D1 (Puente Nuevo): No facilities. Estimated bathers 15 weekends / 10 weekdays.

Risks

Zone D1 exhibits stagnation due to slowly renewed water volumes. Algal coverings and deposits present in bridge area that are easily disturbed when entering water.
