The Río Cúa in Cacabelos is a continental river bathing area located in León, Castilla y León, Spain. The bathing zone is situated within the Miño-Sil river basin, part of the cántabro-atlantic siliceous fluvial axes. The water body has a catchment area of 550 km² with elevations ranging from 420 to 1980 meters. Mean annual precipitation in the influence area is 720 mm, with December being the wettest month and August the driest.

Water

River (Río Cúa) in the Sil sub-basin. The influence area has a surface of 59.4 km² with maximum elevation of 991 meters and minimum of 420 meters. Mean monthly flows vary seasonally: January-March 3.31 m³/s, April-June 2.36 m³/s, July-September 1.35 m³/s, October-December 1.78 m³/s. Three-year return period flow rate is 158.74 m³/s.

Facilities

Parking, informational signs, picnic areas, waste bins, showers, and containers. No lifeguard, bar, toilets, boating facilities, or domestic animal access.

Water Quality

The water body (Río Cúa IV, code ES425MAR001002) does not achieve good status. Microbiological monitoring in 2017 measured enterococci and Escherichia coli concentrations. Identified pollution sources include 11 authorized urban wastewater discharges, livestock farming (cattle 0.04, sheep 0.05, pigs 0.01, poultry 0.09 per hectare per year), mining activities (4.90% of area), and urban runoff (0.14% of area).

Risks

Potential short-duration contamination risks from: wastewater treatment system failures or sewer line leaks, livestock waste discharge, agricultural and livestock runoff during heavy rainfall, high bather numbers on weekends, illegal dumping, dead animals, sediment remobilization, organic debris from rainfall or bathers, and reduced river flow conditions. Mining and livestock farming represent diffuse pollution sources. Heavy rainfall can trigger sediment mobilization and organic debris transport.
