Río Esca Burgui is a bathing area located in the Esca River as it passes through the town of Burgui in Navarra, Spain. Water

Mountain river with humid limestone characteristics. Single-channel course with low sinuosity and gravel/stone substrate. River bed composed of medium and coarse sands, pebbles and gravel. The bathing area contains pools. Average monthly discharge during bathing season (July-August) is available. Four-year return period discharge: 215 m³/s. Ecological reference flow: 0.530 m³/s.

Location

Burgui, Navarra, Spain. Access via the Roman bridge; vehicles should be parked and entry completed on foot. Two parking areas are available adjacent to the bathing zone. Roads NA-137 and NA-214 provide access to the municipality.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring conducted 2013-2018 using Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci measurements per Royal Decree 1341/2007. The water body surface mass is classified as worse than good; however, no significant incompliance in biological, physicochemical and hydromorphological indicators. Possible health risks to swimmers occur at intestinal Enterococci concentrations exceeding 1000 UFC/100 ml and river flows below 0.084 m³/s.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risk from users of the bathing area (self-contamination). Possible microbial pollution episodes affecting bather health under specific conditions of low river discharge and high intestinal Enterococci concentration.
