The Uztárroz river bathing area is a natural river pool located in the Pyrenees of Navarre, Spain, at an altitude of 838 metres. During summer months, a temporary wooden weir is installed under two bridge arches to create a small reservoir pool for bathing. The bathing area is situated at the entrance to the village of Uztárroz before crossing the bridge over the river. The river is classified as a high mountain stream with rocky substrate composed of limestone, slate, and sandstone.

Water

High mountain river. Uztárroz river with a single, straight channel. Catchment area: 28.25 km². Maximum elevation: 1,793.3 metres; minimum elevation: 845.5 metres. Average basin slope: 43.83%. Mean annual precipitation: 1,515 mm. Bed material consists of medium sands, pebbles, and boulders. A temporary wooden weir creates a pool during summer months.

Location

Uztárroz village, Navarre province, Spain. Access via the N-140 road from Ochagavía. The bathing area is located at the entrance to the village before crossing the bridge over the Uztárroz river. Parking is available.

Facilities

Parking available. Informational signage present. Waste bins and containers available. Rubbish collection daily. Wastewater treatment: EDAR Uztarroz. Domestic animals prohibited. No lifeguard stations, toilets, showers, bar/restaurant, recreation zone, or boat ramp. The river pool is artificially enhanced by a temporary wooden weir.

Season

Normally from mid-July to early September. Exact dates are established annually by the autonomous community.

Water Quality

Water quality classification from 2013–2018 period shows BUENA (GOOD) rating. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations were monitored according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Surface water body status is BUENO O MEJOR (GOOD or BETTER). Main potential contamination sources are sheep farming (4,420 head) in the catchment area and short-duration pollution risks from runoff, accidental spills, and sediment remobilisation.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risk considered low. Potential risks include livestock runoff from sheep farming, accidental spills from sewerage system failures, sediment remobilisation during heavy rainfall or high bather numbers, organic waste from high visitor numbers, dead animals, and unusually low river flow at the end of summer.
