Coscojal Beach is a continental bathing area located on the Jándula River near Andújar in Jaén province, Andalusia. The river at this location features a single, highly sinuous channel with numerous boulders and rocky substrates composed primarily of granite. The bathing zone is situated downstream of the Encinarejo dam and upstream of the confluence with the Guadalquivir River. The area is well-conserved with native vegetation including pines and holm oaks, and is designated as a recreational zone with picnic facilities.

Water

Jándula River, classified as a low Mediterranean mountain river with siliceous composition. The bathing area contains an embankment volume of 3,500 cubic metres. Mean annual flow is 19,216 cubic metres per hour with an environmental flow rate of 0.95 m³/s. Summer mean flow is 10,838 cubic metres per hour. The four-year return period flow is 182 m³/s. The riverbed is covered with algae and contains rounded stones.

Location

Andújar, Jaén Province, Andalusia. Access via the JV-501 road from Andújar heading towards Maroteras; after several kilometres at El Rancho, turn left to continue on JV-501, then proceed to the Jándula River and cross the bridge. The bathing zone is accessed by a right turn after the bridge. No parking facility is available.

Facilities

Picnic areas (merenderos), waste bins, information signs, and a recreational zone are present. Absent facilities include parking, lifeguards, toilets, showers, snack bars, piers, swimming pools, fountains, and pet access areas.

Water Quality

Water quality classifications from 2003 to 2009 show the bathing area as conforming to guide values and imperative values. Monitoring data from 2008 and 2009 measured Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations. Fecal contamination levels were recorded below the regulatory thresholds during the monitored seasons. No significant populations exist in the influence zone.

Risks

Potential short-duration contamination risks identified include accidental or illegal discharges, livestock runoff from cattle (1,970 head), sheep (1,171 head), goats (179 head), and pigs (2,815 head), dead animals, organic waste, and sediment remobilisation. A dam is located upstream of the bathing zone.
