The Río Miño bathing area is located in Outeiro de Rei, Lugo, Galicia, Spain, in the upper Miño river basin within the Atlantic hydrographic demarcation. The bathing zone has an area of 700 m² with a riverbed that is possibly muddy and sandy downstream. The water body is classified as being in good or better condition according to the Water Framework Directive.

Water

River (Río Miño) in the upper Miño basin, Atlantic watershed system. Bathing area covers 700 m². Mean monthly flows range from 2.127 m³/s (July-September) to 9.043 m³/s (January-March). Three-year return period flow is 430.2 m³/s. Riverbed is possibly muddy with sandy areas downstream.

Location

Outeiro de Rei, Lugo province, Galicia, Spain. Access via the N-VI road towards A Coruña; after passing the Río Miño restaurant on the left in Outeiro de Rei, move to the centre lane, turn left at the town hall plaza, and continue approximately 700 metres to reach the recreational area. Parking is available.

Facilities

Parking, informational signs, snack bar, picnic areas, 1 toilet facility, 5 waste containers, 3 drinking fountains, swimming pools, recreational use permitted. No lifeguard station, no showers, no boat ramp.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water classified as good or better condition. Monitoring conducted during 2011-2015 bathing seasons tracked intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli concentrations against Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007 standards for adequate quality bathing waters.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks identified include: point source discharges from Rábade sewage system failures; diffuse contamination from livestock runoff due to manure storage rupture or overflow; agricultural runoff from heavy rainfall; high bather numbers on weekends; accidental or illegal discharges; dead animals in bathing area; sediment mobilisation during heavy rainfall; organic waste from heavy rainfall and bather use; abnormally reduced river flow exacerbating contamination risk.
