Ruppiner See is the longest lake in Brandenburg, located north of Berlin near Neuruppin. It is a maximum of 800 metres wide and 14 kilometres long. The lake was formed during the last ice age when meltwater carved deep channels into frozen ground, creating a basin with a maximum depth of 24.2 metres. The lake is divided into two sections by a railway embankment with two narrow passages. It is part of the Ruppiner waterway system and serves as a water storage facility for the Rhinluch to the south.
