Ruppiner See is a natural freshwater lake located north of Berlin near Neuruppin. At 14 km in length and maximum 800 m width, it is the longest lake in Brandenburg. The lake was formed during the last ice age when meltwater carved deep channels into frozen ground beneath glacial ice. It is divided into two sub-basins by a railway embankment with two narrow passages. The lake experiences stable temperature stratification in summer and has a water exchange time of approximately 1.5 years.
