Locmariaquer is a peninsula located in southern Brittany at the western entrance of the Gulf of Morbihan, spanning 1,100 hectares with three distinct coastal facades. The commune has two designated bathing zones: La Falaise beach, oriented south on the south-east coast, and Saint Pierre beach, oriented south-west on the south-west coast. Both beaches feature sandy foreshores, small mudflats, and rocky platforms that are exposed at low tide. The area experiences significant tourism during summer months, with the permanent population of approximately 1,700 multiplying by tenfold seasonally.

Water

Coastal bathing areas within the Gulf of Morbihan at the entrance to Quiberon Bay. Maximum tidal range coefficient of 116 with water column height of 5.25 metres. Average tidal range coefficient of 65 with average water column height of 4.5 metres. Maximum current velocity of 0-1.5 knots at La Falaise and 0-0.5 knots at Saint Pierre during average spring tides. Foreshores composed principally of sandy substrates, small mudflats, and rocky platforms.

Location

Locmariaquer is located in southern Brittany (Morbihan), approximately 16 km west-south-west of Vannes. The two bathing zones are situated in the southern part of the commune: La Falaise beach is oriented south on the south-east coast; Saint Pierre beach is oriented south-west on the south-west coast.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring includes bacterial contamination analysis (Escherichia coli and Coliform bacteria), shellfish contamination assessment, and evaluation of macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential. Water quality classifications have been determined for both bathing zones. Bacterial contamination correlates with rainfall episodes. Potential pollution sources have been identified and inventoried for both beaches, including direct pollution sources within the watersheds and diffuse pollution sources. Non-collective sanitation systems have been assessed in designated zones.
