Schumellensee Boitzenburg

Germany Lake 1 - Excellent

Schumellensee is a lake located in northeastern Brandenburg, approximately 2 km west of Boitzenburg in the Uckermark Lakes Nature Park. The almost triangular basin has a surface area of 25.8 hectares and a maximum depth of about 13 metres. The lake is fed by three inflows: the Strom river from the north, the outflow from Hardenbecker Haussee from the west, and the drainage from the Suckowseen chain from the southeast. The lake offers very good water quality and is characterized by clear water with limited riparian vegetation due to steeply sloping shores, but notable underwater vegetation including rare plant species.

Water

Natural lake with a surface area of 25.86 hectares. Maximum depth of 13 metres. Mean water transparency ranges from 0.7 to 1.8 metres. Water temperature ranges from 9.5°C to 23.9°C with a mean of 20°C. pH values range from 7.25 to 8.18 with a mean of 7.48. The lake exhibits stable temperature stratification in summer. Freshwater lake with salinity less than 0.5‰.

Location

Boitzenburg, northeastern Brandenburg, approximately 2 km west of the town. The bathing site is located at the eastern shore of the lake.

Water Quality

Rated as excellent (ausgezeichnet) for all four-year assessment periods from 2016-2019 through 2021-2024. Escherichia coli 95-percentile values range from 38 to 48 per 100 ml; 90-percentile values range from 32 to 35 per 100 ml. Intestinal enterococci 95-percentile values are 15 per 100 ml; 90-percentile values are 15 per 100 ml. No exceedances of microbiological parameters E. coli and intestinal enterococci were recorded. The lake is classified as moderately nutrient-rich according to LAWA assessment.

Risks

No cyanobacterial blooms have been observed during bathing seasons. No future danger of mass development of cyanobacteria is identified. Macroalgae and aquatic plants are present; however, no future danger of mass phytoplankton development is identified. No short-term microbiological contamination is expected. No other pollution is expected.
