The bathing water is a gently sloping, shingle beach giving way to a large, flat sandy area towards the sea. There is a small wooden jetty leading down from the village to the beach.

Risks

In the event of high rainfall, Braystones treatment works is permitted to release sewage via both a long sea outfall to the Irish sea and a storm overflow located to the north of the bathing water.
There is a pumping station located close to the beach known as Seascale Foreshore Pumping Station. This can discharge sewage under emergency conditions but there are no known operational issues with this pumping station.
There are two surface water outfalls that discharge to the beach. The outfalls discharge clean surface water and do not impact bathing water quality.
As part of United Utilities’ most recent programme of work (2020-2025), plans will be made for improvements to Gosforth treatment works and Brookside storm overflow to protect the bathing water from further spill events.
