The beach is steeply sloping and pebbly leading to a large area of flat sand closer to the sea. There are steep cliffs to the north of the beach leading up to St Bees Head.

Risks

Between 2025 and 2030 improvements will be made at Brookside CSO on the River Ehen and St Bees Pumping Station to reduce the number of untreated spills from storm overflows.
This bathing water is included in the Surfers Against Sewage “Safer Seas Service”. This service can alert you to Combined Storm Sewer Overflow discharges via a phone App and in addition, it includes the Environment Agency Pollution Risk Forecast warnings where they are available.
