Sønderstrand

Lakolk Strand and Sønderstrand are bathing areas located on the west coast of Rømø island facing the North Sea. The beaches feature broad sandy shores with fine sand and no algae. The bathing water profile covers approximately 10 km of coastline and has been classified as excellent quality based on monitoring over the last four bathing seasons.

Water

Salt water with sandy seabed. Beaches are 500 to 1800 meters wide. Water depth is highly variable due to large tidal differences, with shallow water extending many meters out. Water depth reaches approximately 2 meters at 300–500 meters from shore. Water currents are variable but predominantly from northwest and south.

Location

Located on Rømø island, west coast. Lakolk Strand is accessed via Vesterhavsvej. Sønderstrand is accessed via Sønderstrandsvej. Both beaches permit driving on the sand.

Facilities

Toilet facilities available at Lakolk Strand (toilet wagons) and at Sønderstrand (toilet facility near beach access). Information boards with Blue Flag information are installed at both beaches.

Season

Official monitoring season: 1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Monitoring is based on analysis of Escherichia coli and Enterococcus bacteria. Classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season. No fecal pollution sources identified in the surrounding area.
