Torre Columena is a free public beach on the rocky coast of Manduria in Puglia, Italy. The bathing water extends over an area of 3.53 km. The water quality has been classified as excellent for the period 2017–2020. The beach is located in a hydrographic basin called Torre Lapillo with no direct sewage discharges or watercourse outlets.

Location

Manduria, Province of Taranto, Puglia region, Italy. Located at the southern boundary of the Torre Cesareo–Torre Colimena Marine Protected Area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017–2020). No sewage treatment plant discharges or wastewater discharges into the sea. No short-term pollution events recorded in the past four years.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. These blooms have caused marine organism mortality and suffering (starfish, sea urchins, crabs, cephalopod molluscs). Bathers have experienced transient illness including rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis during periods of high Ostreopsis ovata concentration, particularly following heavy swells which promote marine aerosol formation and toxin dispersal into the air.
