Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (2017–2020). No discharges of wastewater directly to sea. No short-term pollution events recorded in the past four years. No anomalous situations verified.

Risks

Dinoflagellate microalga Ostreopsis ovata blooms occur seasonally from July to September. Marine organism mortality and distress (starfish, sea urchins, crabs, cephalopod molluscs) have been observed coinciding with high concentrations of Ostreopsis ovata. Swimmers have reported temporary discomfort (rhinitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, fever, dermatitis, conjunctivitis) during periods of elevated Ostreopsis ovata concentrations, particularly after storms when marine aerosols disperse the toxin.
