Water

Lake Kyrösjärvi is a freshwater lake covering 9,621 hectares with a total depth of 48 metres and volume of 1,019,826,000 cubic metres. Water levels during summer range from 82.40 to 83.70 metres (NN). The catchment area is 2,626.83 square kilometres with a mean residence time of 569 days.

Location

Located in Ikaalinen at Toivolansaarentie, 39500 Ikaalinen. Coordinates: 23.0460, 61.7756. The beach is situated in a recreational area with no residential development nearby.

Lifeguard rings (2 units), jetty, diving platform, separate changing cabins for men and women, waste bins, toilets, beach volleyball court.

Season

June 15 to August 31.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent. The lake has good quality status with a quality class rating of good (10). Water is brown humic water with naturally elevated nutrient levels. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) occur annually, typically during calm, warm weather periods. Monitoring results from 2020–2023 show E. coli and enterococci levels consistently well below threshold values (E. coli < 1000 pmy/100ml; enterococci < 400 pmy/100ml).

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms occur annually. Long periods of calm, warm weather increase the likelihood of cyanobacteria growth. Recorded species include Anabaena spiroides, A. inaequalis, A. circinalis, Microcystis reinboldii, M. viridis, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, and Woronichinia species, some of which can produce toxins. A sewer line runs 170 metres into the lake.
