Torfmoorsee is an artificial lake in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It has been designated as an official bathing water since at least 1992. The bathing area spans 980 metres of shoreline, with 240 metres designated for non-swimmers. The lake covers 24 hectares with sandy and moorland substrate, natural shoreline structure, and layered water characteristics.

Water

Artificial lake covering 24 hectares with an average depth of 10 metres and maximum depth of 20 metres. Water temperature ranges from 13.3 to 23.2 degrees Celsius with a mean of 20.7 degrees Celsius. Water transparency averages 3.1 metres, ranging from 2.2 to 4.0 metres. The lake has no natural inflow and a water exchange time exceeding 30 days. The catchment area is 10 to 100 square kilometres. Substrate is sandy and moorland with natural shoreline structure. Water is mesotrphic with minor water level fluctuations of 0.25 metres.

Location

Located in Hörstel, managed by the city of Hörstel. The lake is situated at lowland elevation below 200 metres above sea level, in the Steinfurt district. A car park covering 3,600 square metres is available.

Water Quality

Water quality was rated as excellent for four consecutive years: 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. No relevant pollution sources have been identified. Cyanobacteria blooms were first observed in 2023, occurring once per year for periods of 3 to 6 days with no large-scale coverage. No future risk of cyanobacteria mass development is anticipated. Macroalgae have not been observed. No future risk of phytoplankton mass development is anticipated.

Risks

Cyanobacteria blooms appeared in 2023, occurring once annually for short periods. Domestic septic systems and drainage water from agricultural land are present in the catchment area but have no relevant impact on water quality.
