Vana-Pärnu beach is a bathing site located on the right bank of the Pärnu River mouth in Pärnu, Estonia. The beach is predominantly grass-covered and features shallow water typical of Pärnu beaches. The bathing area is not marked with buoys, but an information board indicates an average water depth of 1.5 metres approximately 200 metres from the shore. The site accommodates approximately 500 swimmers during peak season and has a shoreline of 635 metres.

Water

Pärnu Bay coastal waters, western Pärnu Bay. Marine water body. Maximum depth is 1.7 metres. Shoreline length of 635 metres. The water is shallow with an average depth of approximately 1.5 metres at 200 metres from the shore.

Location

Pärnu city, Pärnumaa county, Estonia. Located on the right bank of the Pärnu River mouth at the Pärnu Bay. The nearest car park is approximately 60 metres from the water's edge.

Facilities

Changing cabin, dry toilet facility located approximately 114 metres from the waterline, rubbish bins emptied regularly to prevent overflow and odour. A bird observation tower is located 47 metres from the water's edge. Dogs are permitted in the bathing area.

Season

1 June to 31 August. The site is actively maintained from 15 May to 31 October, with facility setup and inventory installation occurring annually between 1 April and 14 May.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under the bathing water directive 2006/7/EC and Estonian regulations. Monitoring includes enterococci and Escherichia coli bacteria indicators. Water quality classification is assessed annually during the bathing season (1 June to 31 August). Historical monitoring data available for 2011-2019 period.

Risks

Potential risk of short-term microbial pollution from the Pärnu wastewater treatment plant, harbours, stormwater and sewage systems, residential areas, and livestock. Potential for cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms. Potential for macroalgae and phytoplankton growth.
