Marine beach in the Mediterranean Sea with sandy substrate and rocks at the eastern extremity. Bathymetric profile slopes gently. Seagrass meadows (Posidonia and Cymodocea) are present at 180 meters from the shore. Infralittoral rocks with photophilic algae are present at the eastern beach edge.

Location

La Croix Valmer, southeastern France. The beach is situated 350 meters from the RD 559 road and 90 meters from the Gigaro district. The western back-beach has been owned by the Littoral Conservatory since 2008.

Facilities

Beach concessions including 4 restaurants, 1 water sports activity, and 1 parasol/mattress rental. Embarkadere used by multiple maritime activity operators. Mooring facilities with anchoring buoys in an authorized anchoring zone.

Official monitoring conducted during bathing seasons 2006-2009. Summer season referenced with peak water temperature of 26°C.

Water Quality

Type 1 bathing water profile indicating no proven risk of water pollution. Water quality classification is sufficient, good, or excellent according to directive 2006/7/CE based on four latest bathing seasons (2006-2009). All classifications were A (good quality) during 2006-2009. Water quality is influenced by urban stormwater runoff containing heavy metals typical of vehicular traffic and by potential phytoplankton proliferation. Cadmium presence, traces of diesel oil and surfactants characteristic of urbanized watersheds are documented. Suspended matter indicates watershed sensitivity to erosion.

Potential phytoplankton proliferation (blooms) documented in the Mediterranean region. Cyanobacteria risk with manifestations including blue-green colorations and eutrophication. Potential for brown foam and mucilage on rocks. Heavy metal pollution from vehicular traffic. Risk of wastewater discharge during heavy rain events due to combined sewer system weaknesses and pump station malfunctions. Stormwater overflow via storm relief valves possible during significant rainfall events.
