Bonporteau is a Type 1 bathing water beach located on the French Mediterranean coast. The beach features a sandy and rocky substrate with a steep bathymetric profile indicating strong wave exposure and regular water circulation. Posidonia seagrass meadows are present at the beach, indicating good environmental quality. The beach is exposed to winds from all directions, with south-westerly winds dominant in summer.

Water

Mediterranean Sea beach with sand and rocky facies. Summer water temperature averages 22°C with a maximum of 26°C. The bathymetric profile shows a steep drop-off indicating significant wave exposure and regular water mass mixing.

Location

Located in the Maures coastal area of France, approximately 200 m from the D559 road. The beach is accessed via the Fenouillet watercourse basin.

Water Quality

Water quality is influenced primarily by stormwater discharge from the Fenouillet watercourse. The watercourse drains a predominantly natural basin (forest and maquis) but passes through a former municipal waste landfill, potentially contributing micro-pollutants from leachate. The watercourse shows mixed pollution of mineral and organic origin with high suspended matter concentrations, elevated cadmium and mercury concentrations, and detergent concentrations. Phytoplankton proliferation risk is low at Bonporteau due to wave and wind exposure and bathing zone depth. Cyanobacteria and macroalgae are not of concern for the site.

Risks

Stormwater events generate suspended matter through soil erosion. Cyanobacteria and blue-green colorations are potential concerns. Mousy brown foam and mucilaginous substances may appear on rocks. Elevated summer water temperatures can occur. Phytoplankton proliferation has been recorded in the Fenouillet watercourse in recent years, particularly in September, though occurrence remains low at Bonporteau. Risk of faecal contamination exists from malfunctioning sewage networks and waste water pump stations during heavy rainfall. Potential hydrocarbon pollution risk exists from road traffic and the APPIA company located on the RD559. Separation network leakage and illegal connections contribute to sewage overflow during heavy rain. Five septic tanks in the drainage basin present potential contamination risk if poorly maintained.
